Today we are delighted to feature Broward College graduate Destina Decile. A member of the Class of 2020, Destina’s path has been marked by a drive for educational and professional development.
Destina is a proud alumna and we were thrilled to have her join us as a volunteer at the May 2025 Commencement where she assisted Alumni & Friends in greeting and celebrating our newest graduates.
We spoke with Destina and asked her some questions about the impact of Broward College on her journey.
Destina, where did you grow up, and what motivated you to pursue your studies at Broward College?
I grew up in Miami and moved to Fort Lauderdale in 2014. After experiencing some personal challenges early in life, I was determined to build a stable future for myself and my family. Broward College offered an accessible, affordable, and supportive environment where I could continue my education while balancing work and parenting responsibilities. Choosing Broward College allowed me to stay close to home and pursue my academic and career goals.
Can you share one or two standout moments from your time at Broward College?
One standout moment was making the Dean’s List, which reinforced that hard work truly pays off, even when balancing many responsibilities outside the classroom. Another moment that stands out was the enormous support Broward College provided to students during the COVID-19 pandemic. From shifting to online learning quickly to offering additional academic and financial resources such as drive through food and sanitary supply distributions, all which made me feel truly valued as a student when my family and I needed it most.
Were there any professors, mentors, or staff members who made a significant impact on your experience as a student?
Yes, there were a few professors who took the time to genuinely encourage me when I needed it most. Their belief in my potential helped me stay motivated. Additionally, the advisors at Broward College were instrumental in helping me map out a clear academic plan, which gave me the confidence to move forward step-by-step.
What resources or services at Broward College were particularly valuable to you during your time as a student?
The academic advising and financial aid offices were critical resources for me. Having access to guidance on course selection, degree planning, and scholarship opportunities made a huge difference. I also appreciated the flexibility of online and hybrid classes, which allowed me to juggle my education, career, and parenting responsibilities.
What was your path after graduating from Broward College?
After graduating from Broward College with an AA, I transferred to FIU, where I earned both my Bachelor and Master degrees in Business Administration with a specialization in Human Resources Management. Upon completing my Master degree, I pursued and obtained my SHRM-CP certification, which has equipped me with advanced knowledge and skills in human resources management. Broward College’s strong academic foundation helped me sharpen my study skills, manage my time effectively, and develop the resilience I needed to succeed in a more rigorous university environment. Today, I serve as a Talent Acquisition Specialist for UPS, supporting many facilities across South Florida and championing the entire east region of the country on compliance strategies.
